At the tender age of 6 months, when most of the infants would have not even learned to say ‘Maa’, Maitri Shah was diagnosed with the ‘Congenital Muscular Dystrophy’. Even though she was confined to a wheelchair, she refused to go to any ‘special schools’ and completed her education in a regular school. She stood first in HSC MHT-CET examinations in PwD category (Maharashtra) after having scored a whopping 95.09% in her SSC examinations. As a step forward, she went onto graduate in Computer Engineering from the prestigious K.J. Somaiya College of Engineering (Mumbai). She was recognized as a Young Changemaker by Dr. APJ Kalam, 11th President of India at IIT Bombay while she was an engineering student. Currently, Maitri is pursuing her online Masters’ in Computer Science from Georgia Institute of Technology, USA. She then co-founded an NGO named ‘WoW’ (Wills on Wheels) to engage, educate and empower people in wheelchairs. She then went on to form a tech start-up, named ‘Mind Assets’. This company provides online training and new-age digital job opportunities to people with disability so that physical infrastructure is not a barrier to have a career.
Ever Since its inception in July 2017, ‘Mind Assets’ has successfully trained and employed several differently-abled individuals based on their merit and is currently being incubated by ‘Riidl’ (the name of ‘Somaiya’s Incubation Cell’), UnLtd India (Incubation for social entrepreneurs). Maitri had the privilege to meet Padma Vibhushan Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar, Former DG, CSIR & President, Indian National Science Academy at Maharashtra Start-up Week, as part of top 100 start-up finalists.
