Journalist-turned-entrepreneur Gangadhar Patil speaks about the untapped potential of rural journalism in India and why he quit his stable job with a top national daily to start a platform that would give mainstream exposure to rural reporters. In the past four years, his news startup has put spotlight on hundreds of rural stories that inform, entertain and shock. Gangadhar Patil, 34, is a TED and Ashoka fellow. He quit mainstream media in 2015 to pursue his interest in investigative journalism by building a strong network of grassroots journalists. His media startup 101Reporters is helping hundreds of local reporters tell important untold stories. His last assignment was with India’s largest business daily, The Economic Times as Senior Correspondent in New Delhi. He began his journalism career with The New Indian Express, Chennai in 2010 and went on to work with Zee Media, Mumbai in 2011.
