Yin has been facing a lot of people asking her why her bread she sold was spoiled when she first introduced sourdough bread to the community at Penang. As a non-professional baker, Yin changed her career from a pharmacist and became sourdough bread baker and entrepreneur because she realized the uniqueness and high value of sourdough bread. Chan Su Yin, owner of Yin’s Sourdough Bakery and Yin’s WholeFood Manufactory, supervises every step from preparing the starter to the ingredients from before the dough is pushed into the oven. A baker who follows strictly the fermentation method, she does not use commercial yeast in any of her bakings. Instead, she cultivates her own sourdough culture to naturally ferment all of her baked goods the concept will also be the same; most of the ingredients will be locally sourced and every item will be made from scratch.

With all her love and passion in baking, she wants to change how people perceive bread, nutrition, and the environment. For her it’s all about health, taste, education, connection, and community. It’s impossible to separate how we choose our bread from how we treat our soil and how we farm our grain.

“Baking is fun and though I am running a business, to me, making a profit is secondary.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at
