Each year 1 billion plastic straws are used in Greece, while 500,000 tons of coffee leftovers end up in landfills. Stafanos Kamperis describes how social entrepreneurship can not only replace the plastic straws with others made of wheat, but also how it can turn coffee leftovers into a type of fuel that will be used to warm people’s homes. This initiative does not stop here however; the revenue will be used to build houses for those in need.

Από τα πλαστικά καλαμάκια στην κοινωνική επιχειρηματικότητα

Κάθε χρόνο ένα δισεκατομμύριο πλαστικά καλαμάκια χρησιμοποιούνται στην Ελλάδα και μαζί με 500.000 τόνους υπολείμματος καφέ καταλήγουν στις χωματερές. Ο Στέφανος Καμπέρης περιγράφει πώς μια κοινωνική επιχείρηση μπορεί όχι μόνο να αντικαταστήσει τα πλαστικά καλαμάκια με άλλα, κατασκευασμένα από σιτάρι, αλλά και να μετατρέψει τα υπολείμματα του καφέ σε καύσιμο για θέρμανση. Αυτή η πρωτοβουλία δεν σταματάει όμως εδώ, καθώς τα εισοδήματα από αυτήν τη δραστηριότητα θα χρησιμοποιηθούν για την κατασκευή σπιτιών που θα δοθούν σε αυτούς που τα έχουν ανάγκη.

Stefanos Kamperis is the Co-Founder and President of Omnes. Omnew is a Greek non-profit, voluntary association that produces and markets a single-use wheat straw that is 100 percent natural and compostable. The move may even help lift the economy of a region struck by the financial crisis and help with the integration of 700 Syrian refugees. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at
