Here’s Great Tip: Why Education Needs Entrepreneurs | Mandela Schumacher-Hodge | TEDxLoyolaMarymountU
Here is Something You Should See…
Mandela has quite an impressive resume in supporting entrepreneurship. In this talk, she reminds us all that formal education is a social construct and that it’s about time we hone in on our power to construct it differently.
During her time as a middle school teacher in South Central Los Angeles and Pacoima, CA, Mandela earned a Master’s Degree in Education Administration and Policy, and was admitted into a top six Ph.D. education program. Thereafter, she co-founded the edtech startup, Tioki, which became dubbed “The LinkedIn for Educators.” In 2013, Mandela was appointed the Global Director of Education Entrepreneurs at UP Global (now Techstars). Within the first year, her team scaled the organization from three to six continents, solidifying it as the largest initiative in the world dedicated to teaching people how to use entrepreneurship to improve education. In 2014, Mandela was named to the Forbes “30 Under 30 in Education” list, a distinction recognizing her influential accomplishments at the intersection of education, technology, and entrepreneurship.

Quote: 08:49 “…the entrepreneur already lives inside each and everyone of you. Entrepreneurship is a mindset, it’s an empowering mindset, it’s belief. It is believing that you are not just a cog in the wheel, that you can affect the wheel, that you can innovate the wheel, you can make a better wheel.”
Fixing the education system through developing the entrepreneurial mindset:
1. 09:35 Question things, risk being called crazy.
2. 11:11 Get inspired, expose yourself to something someone else has already contributed to the world.
3. 12:20 Decide what you want, what you believe, where you stand; someone with a made-up mind.
4. 13:43 Take action; to know and not to do, is really not to know; it’s going to take work.
5. 14:56 Enlist others; utilise resources outside of oneself; recognise the importance of enlisting others in a vision.
Wrap-up:
15:46 – Education is key to our ability to not just to thrive, but reach our greatest potential. But education system setup to date, some people are benefitting, some people are not. Education needs entrepreneurs.
16:53 – A movement of entrepreneurs working to improve education, that could surely change the world. The world needs that someone, ready to step up and be that entrepreneur.
It's a shame to see this wonderful and insightful talk been seen and commented by such a less number of individuals over almost 4 years. In a way, this itself underlines the significance of what Mandela is talking about.
Fantastic.!
It is an amazing talk.
