Dr.Swati Subodh is a scientist, a social entrepreneur, a writer and a dancer. She took us on an interesting journey to change our perspective of knowledge itself. She spoke about why going beyond the depths into the breadth of one’s work is relevant especially in today’s world. Expertise in your subject needs to be backed up with knowledge in multiple fields. One must embody the concept of ‘Jack of all trades, master of none, better than the master of one.’ How many times have we heard the question ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’. Why do we attempt to limit the limitless? Throughout our lives we restrict ourselves to the boxes we ourselves have created trying to go deeper and deeper into something without exploring the lengths and breadths of it. Dr.Swati Subodh elaborated on why breaking out of these self-imposed boxes is important. She spoke about how breaking out of these shackles of thought will be the key to some of humanity’s pertinent issues. We conduct ‘hackathons’ and competitions that encourage out of the box thinking after teaching kids to think inside the box all their lives. This, she says, is the problem. She encourages everyone to break free and find solutions beyond the bounds.

She took us on a ride down memory lane giving parables and going back and forth on the decisions she’s made explaining the central idea of becoming more than just another brick in the wall, a cog in the machine. She gave us glimpses of her own life throughout her years as a scientist and researcher to social entrepreneur and writer and more. She left us with the idea that we don’t have to live restrained, that we can be more and that we never have to restrict ourselves to being just one thing. That we can live to our full potential, exploring the breadth as well as the depth of the knowledge in the universe.

Dr. Swati Subodh is a scientist-social entrepreneur-columnist and artist.

Swati is a scientist in the field of biotechnology and has led national and international projects with her group within CSIR. She has published widely and presented at reputed forums on her work in infectious disease biology. Her interest is in genomics which she pursues with passion in the hope of linking it with accessible & affordable healthcare. Swati is also part of a team that manages a philanthropic social innovation fund in healthcare. As a social entrepreneur she co-founded 1 Million for 1 Billion (1M1B), a social innovation and future skills initiative aligned to the UN SDGs with special consultative status to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and associated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications. 1M1B aims to support one million entrepreneurs to lift one billion people out of poverty. As a writer and columnist, Swati writes columns and articles for various magazines and newspapers. Her work on science, technology, startups and future of healthcare has been published in leading media platforms. She intertwines the fields of healthcare, social entrepreneurship and science.
