Gary is 100% spot on at 9:45 – asking the right questions is key- even though incredible cliche in the consulting world. You can make up for a lack of deep expertise when talking to a subject matter expert by framing questions in the right way. In software, if you know the end goal of the user, it can help you reverse engineer the process (though a lot of times backing up into some pretty deep weeds) and help you figure out the answer and best path forward from the problem. However – no guarantees your head won't hurt along the way – definitely the dirt before the clouds!
